Realized less than 6 weeks before trip that my passport was too close to expiring for travel planned on 6/7. Overnighted the renewal application the next day and received new passport exactly three weeks from mailing in renewal. I used the form filler for the paper application and reported my travel dates on the form. At the time I submitted my form expedited service was 7-9 weeks.

My travel was within the 14 days and had to get the passport before our trave date. Called the hotline and got an appointment for 11th May at the Miami passport agency. Travel is 25th May and we got our passports today – 16th May. Notified our congressmen as well to assist in this and they were regularly in touch with the Miami passport agency to get the status of my passports. They helped us a lot and we got our passports within 3 business days.

This is for my child’s passport renewal, which is processed as a first time application so we had to go in person.

4/3 – Applied in person. Paid for expedited processing, shipping there and back.
4/10 – Status changed to “In Process” and this is the day it was received by NPC. I have no idea why it took a week when I paid for expedited shipping.
4/25 – Reached out to my congresswoman’s office hoping they’d be able to put a rush on it. They were on it.
5/1 – Followed up on progress – nothing new yet.
5/5 – Called my constituent advocate working on the case. She explained a little about how it works with the congressional inquiry. Those go in to a separate queue. Then, they’re processed by order of travel date. She assured me not to worry.
5/11 – Still no update. E-mailed my rep to see if she could follow up with NPC again. She followed up that day and let me know that NPC told her if my passport is not shipped by 5/25 it would be pulled for urgent travel, but they believe I will receive it sooner than that.
5/12 – Status FINALLY changed to approved and says I should receive on or around 5/17.
5/16 – Received call from my rep letting me know it was shipped and provided me tracking #.
5/17 – I finally received it on 5/17. The status was never changed to mailed though.

Overall, it took just over 6 weeks from the day I applied to the day it was received, or just over 5 weeks of actual processing. At this point, the time frame for expedited processing is still 7-9 weeks so I’d say that’s pretty good. I’m not sure if contacting my congresswoman was the reason it was processed more timely, but I’m glad I did it! What a relief! My trip is 6/1 so I still have a couple weeks to spare.
