Passport Waiting Time

Current Published Figures

Current U.S. Passport Processing Times

These are today’s published Passport Waiting Time figures for first adult, adult renewal, and child passports, each split by routine and expedited service. Waiting time is calendar days from the recorded application date to the date the passport was received.

Official U.S. Department of State processing estimates do not include mailing time and are a different measurement. Confirm current official estimates on the Department of State processing-times page (opens in a new tab).

Current Routine Passport Processing Times

Routine service is shown separately from expedited. Each card is a published Passport Waiting Time figure, not an official government estimate.

Current Expedited Passport Processing Times

Expedited applications currently have their own published figures. Colour is a category marker only; the badge also says Expedited.

How Long Are U.S. Passports Currently Taking?

How long it takes to get a passport depends on the application type and service level. The cards above show how long it is currently taking to get a passport for first adult, renewal, and child applications, with routine and expedited passport processing times listed separately.

These passport waiting times are crowd-sourced published figures, counted as calendar days from application to receipt. They are not official Department of State processing estimates, and they are not a forecast for any one application.

Routine vs Expedited Passport Processing

Passport Waiting Time treats routine and expedited as separate products, so expedited applications currently have their own published figures rather than being mixed into the routine averages.

Official expedited service rules, eligibility, and fees belong to U.S. Department of State guidance. Use the official pages for how to request expedited service.

Official Processing Times vs Real Applicant Wait Times

The two measurements answer different questions. They should not be compared as identical metrics.

Official Department of State Guidance

Government Processing Estimates

The U.S. Department of State publishes official processing estimates for routine and expedited service. Those estimates cover government processing only and do not include mailing time to or from a passport agency or center.

Real Applicant Wait Times

Passport Waiting Time measures submitted application date to received date in calendar days. That can include mailing, so it should not be compared as the same metric as the official processing estimate.

How We Calculate Passport Waiting Times

Figures come from approved, public applicant timelines. Waiting time is calendar days from the application date to the date the passport was received. Same-day receipt counts as 0 days.

Headline averages use recent eligible data and are published only when the sample is large enough. If there is not yet enough data, we show insufficient data rather than inventing a number. Some products may display a published figure or a recent fallback; each card labels that source.
