This was much faster than I had expected, given recent delays in processing. According to the State Department’s notice at the time I applied, for regular, non-expedited service, it should take 10-13 weeks from the time application is received to the time the passport is mailed. In my case, the passport was mailed out exactly 8 weeks from the day it was received by the agency.

The only downside was that I never received a single email update, even though I signed up for updates and verified the correct email address is associated with my application. It would have been nice to not constantly have to go online and check status.

29 Apr 2023 – Trip booked for August 5, 2023 and realized daughters’ passport was expired. Found an available appointment 80 miles from my home as nothing was available in Houston for at least 3 weeks
1 May 2023 – Applied at USPS for an expedited child passport with overnight shipping to passport agency and express return shipping.
3 May 2023 – Application received by agency and status changed to processing at El Paso agency number 78
29 June 2023 – Status changed to shipped with tracking number provided and then status changed to approved later the same day
30 June 2023 – Received passport

Overall days from the time processing began to shipment was 57 days and overall time from application to receiving new passport was 60 days. I lucked out with getting this passport well ahead of our trip and will pay much closer attention to the expiration dates on our passports in the future to avoid the stress of having to wonder if it will be issued in time + avoid the extra rush fees which nearly doubled the cost.

System showed daughter’s passport was “in process” on May 9. On June 6, received letter from Dept of State stating the submitted renewal form was incorrect to replace her expired youth passport (this was the one the post office acceptance center insisted we should submit, despite our expressed doubts). Resubmitted correct form in-person at local post office on June 8 and paid all expedited fees for a second time to resubmit, as required. University requires application for a study visa one month prior to student’s early August departure date so our lead time was short. Was unable to get a status update from 877 support number and were told not a single urgent processing appointment was available in all of U.S. Contacted our Senator’s office on June 26 and was amazed by the staff member’s attention and concern for our needs.After staff calls to congressional direct phone line (took 2 days for her to get a response from Western Center), we received the passport on June 30, just one day before we needed to have it for timely study visa scheduling. What a relief! So grateful for our Senator’s office assistance! Also, second expedite fee was refunded to us. Stressful process but a great outcome in the end.
